It's All About the Outdoor Shopping

For better or for worse, shopping malls have become the town squares of American society. Entertainment, along with shopping, is the name of the game for malls these days. So, a trip to the mall means a little shopping, something to eat, then catch a movie. And some malls do the entertainment thing better than others (Westfield Shoppingtowns notwithstanding).

Enjoying the sights and warm sun of San Diego goes hand-in-hand with shopping. Malls here aren't your typical retail experience; they're all about the outdoors. Here are some highlights from different areas throughout San Diego County:

North County

North County offers everything from expansive outlet malls to small boutiques. Shopping at outlets like Carlsbad Premium Outlets is practically a sport here, with famous names selling shoes, clothing, housewares and jewelry at huge discounts. The Cedros Design District in Solana Beach is devoted to displaying exceptional finds for the home, from exotic wood furnishings to unique garden displays. At University Town Center , you can easily spend a day ice skating around an indoor rink and strolling past courtyards and cafes. The picturesque streets of La Jolla offer fashionable clothing boutiques and art galleries.

Mission Valley

Mission Valley, in the heart of San Diego, is the place to go for everything from conditioner to couture. The Mission Valley Shopping Mall is perfect for all of life's necessities with a two-story Target and 20 screen movie theater. Just a few miles west, Fashion Valley is for the fashion conscious with an outdoor tour of the latest designs from Tiffany and Co., Burberry and Betsey Johnson in luxurious window displays.

Central San Diego

South of Interstate 8, the choices abound as you move between the central San Diego neighborhoods. Enjoy the fragrant smells of classic Italian food and freshly oven-baked pizza while browsing the latest metro-chic furnishings and Murano glassware in Little Italy . Immerse yourself in the colorful culture of the Americas at San Diego's Old Townand Bazaar del Mundo Shops with displays of wearable and one-of-a-kind folk art from Southwest turquoise and pottery to Mexican and South American tapestries. Indie fashion statements are made in areas like North Park and Hillcrest's emerging hip restaurant and shopping scene that includes several trendy galleries and boutiques.
